I have tried with this website to preserve the memories of the Family, which otherwise would be lost to future generations, and to bring alive the lives and times of our Ancestors. Any comments or contributions from relatives would be greatly appreciated.
Simon James Skudder 1950 -
European Hospital, Dar es Salaam
Simon was born at the then, inappropriately named, "European Hospital", Dar es Salaam, on 29th July 1950, at three minutes after midnight. Twin Sally was born at three minutes to midnight on 28th July 1950. He weighed in at 6lbs 2ozs and she at 5lbs. Quite a surprise for poor Mother who had not known she was to have twins until a week before the birth and six weeks early at that.
The Family returned to the UK on the SS Kenya in January 1953, staying with Esme's Mother and Father, Elsie & Ernest Squibb, at Sonning, Cameron Road, Bromley, and then back again to Africa on the SS Leicestershire in May 1954, this time via Mombasa to Nairobi in Kenya.
Started off at St Andrews Kindergarten, Nairobi, in 1954, learning all that carefully rounded joined-up writing and finding ants in the Mars bars (put me off for life), then on to Nairobi Primary School, got moved up a year much to the annoyance of others, made to do the long jump and won a prize!
June 1956 and it's off again to England, 3 days in a twin engined Vickers Viking, never forget the overnight stop at the Grand Hotel, Khartoum, huge high ceilinged bedroom with whirling fans and a funny taste to the water; refueling at a desert airstrip in the scorching heat, the smell of rotting seaweed at Malta and arriving at the "huts" at Heathrow Airport. Stayed at Grandma Squibbs's house in Bromley and went to Kerrywood School, Westmoreland Road, and St. Mark's School, Sunday School. Lazy summer days playing in the Library Gardens and rolling down the hills at Martin's Hill Fields, Bromley.
